Heavy on Fashion Talks to Maya Persaud of Lotty Dotty

Hello all my fashion divas and gurus!  I love introducing new designers to all my divas and gurus especially all my little fashion divas and gurus in training. So for all my mini fashion divas and gurus, this interview and post is for you!

Lotty Dotty has developed a new interactive T-shirt concept that allows one to change the look of one’s T-shirt by using 3D detachable parts.100 T-shirts in one, Lotty Dotty T-shirts and handbags feature a screen-printed figure, reminiscent of a paper-doll, on the front of the T-shirt/bag, with a sewn-on Velcro bathing suit on which a variety of mini designer Velcro-backed “outfits” can be attached and detached.  The outfits are designed by talented up-and-coming clothing designers from all over the world. The Lotty Dotty design team is based in Paris, France.

Heavy on Fashion: Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What's your educational background?

Maya Persaud: I was raised in Hawaii and Maryland. I studied French Literature at University of Maryland and the Sorbonne in Paris and have a Masters degree in Social Anthropology of Development from SOAS University of London. I worked in the fashion business as a model for a few years and then worked for a few fashion magazines in ad sales.  I also worked for NGOs and volunteered with several charities.

Heavy on Fashion: What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?

Maya Persaud: A pleated skirt

Heavy on Fashion: How did Lotty Dotty come to be?

Maya Persaud: Lotty Dotty is a collaboration with many young artists involved. Mini outfits are creations from young designers worldwide. The idea comes from Paper dolls.

Heavy on Fashion: Where do you get your inspiration?

Maya Persaud: From popular culture, Paris, travels

Heavy on Fashion:What are some of your proudest accomplishments as a designer?

Maya Persaud: Coming up with the idea of Lotty Dotty and developing the technique to make it possible

Heavy on Fashion:Where do you see Lotty Dotty in 5 years?

Maya Persaud: I am interested in Social enterprise. I would like to develop a sustainable company. My goal is not to make loads of money, but to develop a company that is "socially conscious" I would also like to continue to collaborate with young designers and create new products....I have a few ideas ;-).

Heavy on Fashion: How do you describe Lotty Dotty style, and how is it different or not from yourself?

Maya Persaud: It is very playful. I'm still a kid at heart so love to follow the work of various artists that develop the mini clothing from various themes like "Alice in Wonderland", "Christmas" or "Fairy Princess".

Heavy on Fashion: What makes you unique from other designers?

Maya Persaud: I think every designer is unique as each has his/her perspective which stems from life experiences. However, the interactive apparel design  is unique and is protected under design patent.

Heavy on Fashion: Where can readers find out more about you and your work?

Heavy on Fashion: Finally, what does fashion mean to you?

Maya Persaud: Wearing fashion is about expressing individuality. We choose what we buy and what we wear andwhat we wear says a lot about who we are.Fashion is also a form of art and expression. There are many young designers and established designers whom I admire such as Alexander McQueen who was a true artist. Lotty Dotty is a platform for young designers who do not have the means to produce and show a collection. They have a carte blanche to create designs for our T-shirts and are credited on our website...
